Mailchimp Real Cost: What Will You Actually Pay?
Mailchimp can look inexpensive at the entry level. The more important question is what happens when your audience grows. This page separates the advertised starting price from the cost drivers that can change your bill.
Strong platform, but contact-based pricing and a much smaller free tier make growth more expensive.
Pricing and research checked: September 15, 2026. Prices are shown in USD where published. Mailchimp pricing can vary by contact count, plan, billing arrangement, promotions and applicable taxes.
The price you see vs. the cost you can reach
$0/month
Up to 250 contacts; sending limits apply.
from $13/month
Base tier shown for up to 500 contacts.
from $20/month
Base tier shown for up to 500 contacts.
from $350/month
Displayed base configuration; larger lists can cost more.
Mailchimp's current pricing is fundamentally contact-based. The starting paid prices are therefore not a reliable forecast of what a growing business will pay.
How the cost changes as your list grows
| Contacts | Essentials | Standard |
|---|---|---|
| 500 | $13/month | $20/month |
| 2,500 | $45/month | $60/month |
| 5,000 | $75/month | $100/month |
| 10,000 | $110/month | $135/month |
These are monthly USD reference prices for the published contact tiers checked in September 2026. Your actual price can differ with the selected plan, account configuration, promotions, taxes and billing terms.
What makes Mailchimp more expensive than the starting number suggests?
- Your contact count matters. Growing the audience moves you into higher pricing tiers.
- Inactive contacts can matter. Mailchimp's pricing model counts contacts beyond simply the people who currently receive your campaigns, so list hygiene can affect cost.
- Email volume matters too. Each plan has sending limits and overage rules.
- The free plan is small. The current Free plan is limited to 250 contacts, making the move to paid pricing relevant much earlier than it once was.
- SMS and other services can be separate. Mailchimp identifies SMS as an add-on in eligible markets rather than something automatically included in every plan.

Overall: 6.8/10. Each criterion carries equal weight (20%). The score is designed to show the cost structure, not to rank a provider on features alone.
Who should consider Mailchimp?
Mailchimp can make sense when you want a mature email-marketing platform with broad integrations, automation and marketing tools in one ecosystem. It is less attractive if your main priority is keeping the long-term cost of a growing subscriber list as low and predictable as possible.
Before you commit
- Check the price at your expected contact count, not only the entry price.
- Decide how often you will clean or archive inactive contacts.
- Check the monthly sending allowance against your campaign frequency.
- Separate core email cost from optional SMS or other paid services.
- Compare the expected cost at 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 contacts before choosing a platform.

How we score providers
The Real Cost Score™ uses five equally weighted criteria: starting price, growth cost, hidden extras, cost transparency and ease of exit. Every provider is assessed using the same framework.
